What a VPN does. And what it doesn’t.

Understand the protection you get before paying for another subscription.

A different route for your connection

A VPN sends your connection through a server run by the VPN provider. A properly configured encrypted VPN tunnel helps protect traffic between your device and that server. Websites generally see the VPN server’s address instead of your usual public IP address.

It does not make you anonymous

Your accounts, cookies and other identifiers can still connect activity to you. A VPN does not turn a fake shop into a real one, stop every form of malware or erase information you voluntarily share. HTTPS still matters.

You are choosing who to trust

Consider who operates the service, what information it collects and how it makes money. Read its privacy policy and look for clear explanations of data handling. Independent audits may provide useful evidence, but check their scope and date.

Match the service to your needs

Before subscribing, check device support, total subscription cost, renewal terms and cancellation rules. Try the apps on your own devices where a trial or suitable refund policy permits. There is no single best VPN for every reader.
